Some days remain exactly the same

Without music, life would be a mistake - Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

I’m inspired by (or just borrowing heavily from, you know) Leo MacCool’s Music of the Moment post.

The past weeks have been kind of tough for a variety of reasons, mostly just because they’ve been mentally and emotionally draining and taxing. so I thought I’d share some of the latest tunes getting me through the day. I’m like Leo in the fact that music often carries me or keeps me going. If I’m NOT listening or singing along to something, then you know things aren’t right. I’m constantly humming, singing, drumming … you get it.

So here are my recent latest favorites (they’re not all new songs, but they’re on heavy rotation for me right now):

[WARNING: Some of these links go to artist MySpace pages. I just wanted to let you know, in case you're morally opposed to MySpace or obnoxious HTML graphics or something. Oh, and some are YouTube links, so they might bring up videos, the end.]

Brandi Carlile – Give Up the Ghost (the entire album)

The Noises 10 – The Hammer, The Anvil The Stirrup (the entire album), especially “Lay This Armor Down” and also “Stuck in the Backseat” from their 5-song EP. Here’s “My Repair,” their collaboration with Brandi Carlile.

Janelle Monae – “Violet Stars Happy Hunting

The Avett Brothers – I like a lot of their stuff, but “I and Love and You“  has been my favorite.

Devendra Banhart – “Baby

The Go! Team – “Doing It Right

The Heartless Bastards – I like pretty much everything I’ve heard from them, but I’m really digging “The Mountain

The Ting Tings – “That’s Not My Name

The CureFascination Street (because seriously, how is that not one of the most haunting and amazing guitar riffs ever? I miss this band)

Melody Gardot – The whole My One and Only Thrill album is great, but I love “If the Stars Were Mine.” Her personal story is pretty incredible too, if you don’t already know it.

That’s all for now. What are you listening to? I’m an audiophile, so I’m always on the lookout for new music.

For various reasons these are my favorites right now. http://www.playlist.com/playlist/18239825931 Well, at least the favorites I could get on project playlist. I always listen to Jenna Mammina’s Under the Influence CD & I have for about 10 years now. I love her. Also some Christian music that I can’t get online. I know, right? Shocking – me & Christian music? :) Hope you like some of these.

FFG: That’s quite a mix! I’m the same way, though. I listen to so many genres that it’s hard to tell where my musical tastes end or begin.

  • lesbo Says:

I can’t wait to listen to these later when I get home.
and you KNOW I love me some brandi. totally obsessed with the new album.

    “Pump Up The Jam”-Technotronic

The you have it! The last 10 songs listened to on my ipod.
After looking at that list, I would not blame you for defriending me because I am clearly a big dork who listens to some random shit.

    xoxoxo

    • G Says:

Liz: I wouldn’t defriend you. You are clearly a big dork, which is precisely why I love you.

(Okay, but Technotronic? Your 311 makes up for that. And that Dixie Chicks song is one of my favorites to sing at karaoke!)

oh yeah, i really like the heartless bastards. gotta check out some of the other stuff listed here. and, totally flattered you borrowed my post idea.

  • Samantha Says:

Thanks for sharing! I’ve just found two more artists I love… Melody Gardot and Brandi Carlile.

  • Em Says:

Leo turned me on to Antony and the Johnsons.

As for my own list, I’m also always listening to Ellis, Opeth (only the quiet stuff like the Damnation album, not the screamy stuff), and Jem.

I love Melody Gardot. I hadn’t heard anything of hers until I looked at this list and decided to look her up.

    • G Says:

Em: Don’t you love Melody’s voice? I have to say … it’s pretty dreamy. It’s excellent background music for a cold night around this time of year.

  • MakingSpace Says:

    Antony and the Johnsons! YEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!

I’m on a Charly Garcia kick right now. Argentinian rocker. Love him.

    • G Says:

MakingSpace: Thanks for the suggestion! I’m going to have to check out this Charly Garcia fellow. New music = ten kinds of awesome.

  • lady brett Says:

ohmigod, melody gardot. that is amazing. also, i am embarrassed to say i hadn’t heard brandi carlile’s new album yet. so, thanks for the push. ’cause damn if it ain’t…damn.

    • G Says:

Lady Brett: I am embarrassed for you! Hey, it happens. The important thing now is that you listen nonstop for the next month or so to make up for it. And yes, it’s just … damn.

  • Lauren Says:

Missy Higgins, “On A Clear Night”

She reminds me a lot of Brandi. My favorite songs are “Where I Stood” and “Sugar Cane,” but my FAVORITE (FAV > fav) is “Forgive Me”.

    I think you’d really like her…

    • G Says:

Lauren: I love Missy Higgins. She is one of my favorites, too. I saw her in concert earlier this year, and she was absolutely amazing. She has one of those voices that just gets to me, you know? Glad to hear I have a fellow fan!

  • Cheree Says:

You know, I tried to post a response to this while sitting in a meeting with my shoes off last week. But, apparently, my phone and WP do not play nice together. Which was awesome to find out AFTER I’d written the damn response out!

Anyway… If you’ve been around my place long enough, you know how I feel about music. And you can get a general idea of what I listen to by browsing my Internets Radio posts.

I love how you have all of these non-top-40 groups, and then out of nowhere there’s the Ting Tings. Cracking me up! Okbye!

    • G Says:

Cheree: My musical tastes are all over the map. I’ll listen to some obscure group for a while, then throw in some Britney Spears for good measure. I love a good folk or rap or pop or jazz song. It doesn’t matter to me!

      • Cheree Says:

Well, I have to charge my iShuffle tonight (kind of surprised it hasn’t died yet, actually), so maybe I’ll post a list of “most played”.

Definitely all over the map! :)
